After the 4-0 win against long-term rivals Wolfsburg, FC Bayern Women are on course for a championship in the league. In the semi-final of the DFB Cup against Frankfurt, the Munich team wants to go one step further towards a historic double.
The women of FC Bayern Munich are currently riding a wave of success. Are they currently as good as ever? “Yes, I would say that we are in an extremely good mood right now,” says striker Lea Schüller in the BR24Sport interview.
After their historic 4-0 win in the league summit meeting with VfL Wolfsburg, the Bayern women are seven points ahead of their long-term rivals from Lower Saxony in the table. The Munich team, so far unbeaten in the league, is once again on course for a championship. In the DFB Cup, there are only two wins left to achieve the historic first double in the club’s history.
Cup semi-final against “feared opponents” Frankfurt
On Easter Sunday (3 p.m., live stream in the ARD media library), the FC Bayern women will play against Eintracht Frankfurt in their living room for a place in the cup final. Despite the strong season so far, the Munich team has great respect for the guests. “Every club has a fearful opponent and Frankfurt is always a team that doesn’t suit us so well,” says Schüller in the BR24Sport interview.
In the current season, the games against Frankfurt have been close: the Bayern women have so far recorded a 0-0 draw at home and a narrow 2-1 win away. Giulia Gwinn knows that Eintracht “have really strong players, especially on the offensive, who can hurt you.”
Meet the she-wolves again?
If the Munich women beat the offensively strong Frankfurt women and make it to the final, they could face Wolfsburg again there. The She-Wolves will play against Essen in the semi-finals. There has been no getting past the Lower Saxony team in the cup in recent years – the DFB Cup has always gone to them in the last nine years. To achieve the double, the Bayern women would have to put an end to this series.
Double would be “amazing”
The last and so far only success for the FCB women in the cup was twelve years ago. In “2012, but I wasn’t there,” laughs Giulia Gwinn, who was only thirteen at the time. For her and the team it would be “a huge goal to come to Cologne and win the cup.”
After being eliminated from the Champions League, the Munich team’s focus is on the double: “We still have two titles that we can win,” explains Schüller. Championship and cup – “that would be awesome,” Schüller continued.
It would be a “hammer” and the first double for the Bayern women in the club’s history.
