FC Bayern Munich’s women started the group stage of the Champions League with a draw. Against AS Roma, Alexander Straus’ team missed the win in the final phase.

The FC Bayern women missed the perfect start to the Champions League season. “We had the chance to make it 3-0,” was the sobering conclusion of goal scorer Jovana Damnjanovic. “Unfortunately we didn’t take advantage of the opportunity.” Teammate Sydney Lohmann was also disappointed after the 2-2 draw on matchday 1 against AS Roma. “It feels a bit like a defeat,” said the 23-year-old. “Now we only have one point.”

Offensive start brings lead

The hosts went into the first group game of the 2023/24 Champions League on Wednesday (November 15th) with a lot of offensive power. Sarah Zadrazil (4th) tried it from the second row, but the ball, like Linda Dallmann’s (10th) shot from six meters, was no problem for Rome goalkeeper Camelia Caesar.

Despite the 2-0 lead, it wasn’t a sure-fire success

The Munich women presented themselves visually superior in the early stages, but the Roman women held up well. Jovana Damnjanovic dealt the Italian guests the first setback with a controversial goal in the 20th minute. The 28-year-old FCB striker pushed the ball over the line from close range to take the lead 1-0. The Italians complained that since there was no VAR the goal counted. The Roma were at least not impressed and looked for a playful solution to the goal.

Despite the lead, the game didn’t develop into a sure-fire success for the Munich team. Georgia Stanway also had to leave the field for a short time with arm problems. And in the 26th minute, Laura Feiersinger had the chance to equalize, but she flicked the ball just over Maria Luisa Grohs’ box. A deflected shot from Katharina Naschenweng made it 2-0 shortly before halftime.

Roma back again after counterattack

The Romans came out of the locker room with a lot of pressure. But FC Bayern was initially in charge. Goal scorer Lea Schüller fought her way dangerously into the penalty area and stabbed the ball onto the goal, while a defender (51′) defused the situation just before the goal line. The next good finish came from Damjanovic (53′), whose shot was parried by Caesar.

After losing the ball in midfield, things happened very quickly. Manuela Giugliano shifted quickly and sent Evelyn Viens steeply to the left. The Canadian shot low with her left in the penalty area and the ball landed in the far corner, unsustainable for Grohs. The Romans got back into the game with the goal to make it 2-1 and pushed for the equalizer. Guigliano then managed to score a brace in the 90th minute. Despite having more chances, the Munich team missed the perfect start to the group phase.
