Goal line technology is to be introduced in the 2nd Bundesliga from next season. The club officials in the 2nd Bundesliga agreed on this on Monday (December 11, 2023) in advance of the DFL general meeting in Frankfurt am Main.
In doing so, the clubs followed a recommendation from the “Football Commission” and the vote of the DFL Executive Committee, both of which had previously been unanimous.
The necessary changes to the statutes are to be decided by the DFL general meeting in spring 2024.
In the Bundesliga since 2015/16
So far, they have not been used in the 2nd league for cost reasons. Now the technology is to be implemented like in the Bundesliga, where seven goal-line cameras are aimed at each penalty area. The technology was introduced in the Bundesliga for the 2015/16 season.
With the goal line technique, the referee is informed immediately as soon as the ball has completely crossed the goal line. A camera system ensures the exact calculation of the ball position.
VAR since 2019/20
The video assistant was introduced in the 2nd Bundesliga for the 2019/20 season.
