Fifth game, tenth goal: Serhou Guirassy from VfB Stuttgart is the man of the hour in the Bundesliga. Not just because of his goals. He was also the decisive player in the 3-1 (2-1) win against SV Darmstadt 98 on Friday evening (September 22nd, 2023).
With the fourth win in the fifth game in the 2022/23 season, VfB Stuttgart climbed to the top of the Bundesliga table, at least for one night. And that had a lot to do with Serhou Guirassy, they’re just getting used to it in Stuttgart.
First Guirassy Enzo Millot equalized 1-1 (22nd minute), then he scored once in the first half (32nd) and once in the second (90th + 3). After five games, Guirassy has already scored ten goals, which is an impressive record. In the history of the Bundesliga, only Robert Lewandowski has achieved this in the 2020/21 season. “Of course I’m happy”said Guirassy to ARD radio.
Zagadou unfortunate – Darmstadt take the lead
And so, because of him, what had started somewhat unfortunately for the Stuttgart team ended well: with a surprising lead for Darmstadt. From the perspective of everyone who supports VfB, it was a rather unfortunate scene, as Stuttgart’s Dan-Axel Zagadou scored into his own goal (17th).
The goal came after Tim Skarke beat opponent Hiroki Ito on the right. Zagadou then tried to clear the ball, but instead sent it into his own goal.
It should remain the most dangerous scene for the newcomer from Darmstadt. With just one point, the Hessians remain stuck in the bottom of the table. That’s not such a big surprise.
He again – Stuttgart’s Guirassy with an assist and goal
As this game continued, VfB Stuttgart showed why they are delighting football fans all over Germany these weeks. Pascal Stenzel crossed inwards from the right, where Guirassy secured the ball with his back to the goal and then laid it off for Millot. And Millot shot well into the left corner.
And then Guirassy scored himself. It was the 32nd minute when Chris Führich moved from the right into the middle. Again Guirassy received the ball with his back to the goal, but this time he turned and then shot. It was a well-placed shot and it landed in the top right corner. Darmstadt’s coach Torsten Lieberknecht told ARD radio: “He has great movements. If you have that self-confidence, you’ll score goals like that. Then everything will come easy.”
Führich and Guirassy conjure up magic
VfB Stuttgart also dominated the game in the second half, and at times it was some really good football. Once, in the 63rd minute, Führich and Guirassy played a double pass. In the end, Führich shot, he also scored, but the preliminary decision was nothing.
Referee Matthias Jöllenbeck received a signal, looked at the scene on the screen again and then decided it was offside.
Guirassy once again provided the final point when he made the final score 3-1 with a fine lob. He had previously caused a novelty when he shot at goal but failed to score. Up until that moment, he had scored a goal with every shot he took this Bundesliga season. They will be able to get over it in Stuttgart.
