La Liga: Atletico wins – Girona remains leaders

As of: September 28, 2023 11:25 p.m

Atletico Madrid fought for three points in Osasuna in a turbulent La Liga game on Thursday (09/28/23). “Atleti” won 2-0 (1-0). The goals were scored by Antoine Griezmann (20th) and Rodrigo Riquelme (81st).

In the turbulent final phase, both teams lost a player with red or yellow-red, and Osasuna coach Jagoba Arrasate was also sent off the field for violent protests. His team had previously scored the supposed equalizer, but the goal was disallowed due to a striker’s foul. Osasuna’s Ezequiel Ávila committed a revenge foul on Alvaro Morata, who received his second yellow in the action.

Real moves past Barcelona after victory

Spanish soccer record champions Real Madrid overtook arch rivals FC Barcelona again on Wednesday – but did not become league leaders. On the 7th matchday, the Royals defeated the newcomers UD Las Palmas, who were clearly inferior in terms of football, 2-0 (1-0) and moved past defending champions Barca again.

In a one-goal game, Real with DFB defense chief Antonio Rüdiger only took the lead shortly before the break through Brahim Diaz (45th + 3). Former Bundesliga professional Joselu increased the score in the 54th minute. Real, in which 2014 world champion Toni Kroos came on as a substitute after 77 minutes, rehabilitated themselves for the 1:3 defeat on Sunday in the city derby at Atletico.

Girona FC remain leaders

However, the leader is FC Girona, one point ahead of Real and two points ahead of Barca. The still unbeaten surprise team came from behind to beat former Europa League winners FC Villarreal 2-1 (0-0) on Wednesday. On Saturday there will be a duel with the Royals.

Barcelona drops points in Mallorca

With the German national players Marc-André ter Stegen and Ilkay Gündogan but without Robert Lewandowski in the starting line-up, the league leaders did not make enough use of their playful superiority on Tuesday evening (September 26th, 2023) and had to be content with a 2-2 (1-2).

After a fatal bad pass from Ter Stegen, Mallorca took the lead early on through Vedat Muriqi (8th minute). The interim equalizer by Raphinha (41′) didn’t last long, as Abdon Prats (45’+3) was there after an extended goal kick and made it 2-1.

The introduction of Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal after an hour brought momentum into the game, which Fermin Lopez, who was also substitute, used to equalize (75′).

Lukebakio scores for Sevilla

Barcelona’s next opponent, Europa League winner FC Sevilla, had previously won against bottom team UD Almeria 5:1 (3:0) and made the jump from the bottom of the table to midfield. Ex-Berlin player Dodi Lukebakio was also among the scorers.
